Tottenham defeated Fulham 2-0 in the ninth round of the 2023/24 English Premier League (EPL) at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, England, on Thursday (Sept. 24). Tottenham extended their unbeaten run to nine games (W7 D2 L2) and reclaimed the lead at the top of the table.

Tottenham gave their home fans a thrilling win. Spurs took the lead in the 36th minute through captain Son Heung-min. After receiving a pass from Heung-min, he beat two defenders before unleashing a powerful right-footed shot. Son’s shot found the corner of the net.

Tottenham added a second goal early in the second half. In the ninth minute of the second half, after receiving a pass from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Son found James Maddison in the penalty area. Maddison finished with a calm right-footed shot to split the net. Tottenham recorded their fourth clean sheet of the season against Fulham.

While Son and Maddison scored, there was another player who shined. It was goalkeeper Vicario, who once again proved his ability to make saves. In the 12th minute of the first half, he stretched out his arm to block a header attempted by Fulham’s Juan Palinha from a corner kick. In the 39th minute, Fulham striker Raul Jimenez’s shot was also saved by Vicario.

Although he failed to get his head to the ball in the 14th minute of the second half, resulting in a goal, he deserves a lot of credit for his performance. According to soccer stats site Sofascore, Vicario made three saves against Fulham, keeping Tottenham’s backline steady. Sofascore gave him a rating of 7.5. He was named to the BBC’s Team of the Week for the ninth round.

At the end of last season, veteran goalkeeper Hugo Lloris announced his intention to leave the club after 11 years with the team. The Spurs selected Vicario to replace him. Vicario spent the 2022/23 season with Empoli in Serie A, keeping 39 clean sheets in 31 games, leading the team to stay up. Tottenham spent €20 million ($287 million) to bring him in.

The move was a huge success. With his excellent reflexes, Vicario has been a stalwart in Tottenham’s goal. According to the EPL’s official website, he has four clean sheets this season, tied for first in that category. His 32 saves are also tied for seventh in the league. Vicario is at the top of his game at Tottenham.
